Special Events & Projects
It had been 3 years since I had visited the Dwell on Design Conference in LA. Always an inspiring trip, I attended several fascinating lectures. Highlights included the science of lighting and how critical it is to design proper lighting. If lighting design is not planned carefully it can adversely affect our natural Circadian rhythms causing sleep problems and more acute medical issues. Another talk featured the design team discussing their process in creating the Air BnB Customer Service center in Portland, Oregon. They had the employees involved in sharing their ideas and participating in the execution of the interior shared spaces, mimicking Air BnB retreats.
New and continuing trends were exemplified at the show. A 3D printed jewelry booth was next to a hand crafted crocheting and knitting booth. Both strong trends, one looking to the future, one celebrating traditional crafts being used in modern ways. Prefab homes are on the rise, the proof being that there were several model homes exhibiting at the show: The Monogram Modern Home, Axiom by Turkel Design, Living Home C6, and more.
Beyond the show downtown LA offered it’s own inspiration.
